Not anytime soon, says Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz, but there is the possibility — and here’s why: Schwartz’s boss, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, told his joint staff members at the start of the year that service dress uniforms are the uniform of the day. So now, airmen who work for Gates — officers and enlisted members — are showing up at the Pentagon in blues every day, enduring the scratchy material and daydreaming about their roomier, no-iron fatigues. JAL this week announced it would cut its work force by 2,700, or about 5 percent. People have been known to pay thousands of dollars for the outfits of JAL and rival airline All Nippon Airways, or ANA.
