The police department has put an end to a British-era rule requiring policemen to wear ceremonial jackets during functions, inspections and while visiting senior officers, a move seen as an attempt to simmer down tensions in the ranks.
Officers above the rank of assistant subinspectors (ASIs) had to wear the ceremonial uniform -the first uniform they get after completing a nine-month training -during Independence Day , Republic Day , police memorial day , promotions, inspections, departmental functions and parades and while reporting to senior officers.
In a circular last week, state police chief Om Prakash relaxed this rule.
