After 38 years of selling uniforms in Livonia, Allie Brothers survives chilly economic times not by being uniform with its competition, but by stepping away from the pack when it comes to customer service.
“With no customers, we have no business,” owner John Allie said.
The store is named after two brothers, John and Assad Allie, who opened their first shop in 1971 on Six Mile. They moved to a location across the street from the current spot on Middlebelt south of Eight Mile, which grew as the business expanded to 10,000 square feet at 20295 Middlebelt.
"We specialize in service, quality, integrity, delivery and price,” said John Allie, the sole proprietor. “But, whatever uniform we sell, we're selling less.”
The family legacy began when John and Assad Allie decided to take a chance in the uniform business. Assad left his job at a tailoring firm and John had worked as a sales manager for United Parcel Service. Assad retired from Allie 10 years ago. John is now the sole owner.
But, family ties at Allie Brothers continue with John; his younger brother, Sam Allie; John's son, Robert and John's grandson, Adam Samaan.
Family members are joined by 10 other employees, including Russ Smith, a longtime staff member who John Allie credits with developing substantial new business for the company.
