Safety uniform allowances cover more than clothing

Each year, every Newark police officer and firefighter receives a stipend to pay for uniforms and equipment to do his or her job.

Those stipends, guaranteed by union contracts, are held in individual accounts by a quartermaster. Police officers and firefighters can request uniforms and other items they want to buy with their allotted funds throughout the year. What they don't spend, they receive in cash at the end of each year.

In 2009, each police officer received $1,250 and each firefighter received $950.

The safety officers used their annual uniform allowances for boots, flashlights and raincoats, but also for laptops and digital cameras. Although the purchases become the employee's personal property, city officials said all the purchases are related to the job.

According to an analysis by ...

Schwartz: Blues not back full time, for now

Psst! Blues might be coming back every day of the week.

Not anytime soon, says Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz, but there is the possibility — and here’s why: Schwartz’s boss, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, told his joint staff members at the start of the year that service dress uniforms are the uniform of the day.

So now, airmen who work for Gates — officers and enlisted members — are showing up at the Pentagon in blues every day, enduring the scratchy material and daydreaming about their roomier, no-iron fatigues.

If change starts at the top and works its way down, ask yourself this if you work in an office: How much longer can it be before I’m wearing my service dress uniform for the whole workweek, too?

Schwartz isn’t looking at “any immediate changes” to the current uniform...

Elkinson's alleged sham centers on the him convincing investors that he brokered government contracts for uniforms and hats through a Japanese manufacturer.

The federal government alleges that Elkinson's representations to investors concerning such an operation were false and that he repaid investors who requested payment on notes due with money he received from other investors.

Airline Uniforms Secretly Sold to Sex Clubs

Airline Uniforms Secretly Sold to Sex Clubs

Air travel might not be so sexy these days, but in Japan plenty of people are willing to pay top dollar for an experience with a club entertainer clad in an authentic Japan Airlines flight attendant uniform.

JAL, Asia's largest airline, which declared bankruptcy in January, is now diligently working to ensure that its uniforms don't slip into the wrong hands as the airline faces massive layoffs, especially among its uniform-wearing crew. JAL this week announced it would cut its work force by 2,700, or about 5 percent.

People have been known to pay thousands of dollars for the outfits of JAL and rival airline All Nippon Airways, or ANA.

Joan Sinclair, a photographer who put together a book called "Pink Box: Inside Japan's Sex Clubs" said there is a big market for such uniforms, which women in ...
