Military uniforms have both an aesthetic and a functional capacity. On the one hand, the uniform identifies a soldier as belonging to particular armed forces, and thus to a particular country: the heavily symbolic meaning of military uniforms has been subject to countless historical, sociological, anthropological and even psychological studies. On the other hand, military uniforms have an invaluable practical and functional purpose in combat operations. There are many lessons that can be learned from history of when unsuitable uniforms have been the decisive factor in battles, or even in wars.
