Dear Editor:

With the holidays nearly upon us, many medical professionals start hoping that among their holiday gifts, they’ll find the perfect uniform.  We thought we’d put together a few tips that nurses can subtlety share with their “gift givers” to help guide their buying so they get the perfect gift.

Of course gift givers will have to choose a uniform that fits within a company policy, but even with restrictions, there are many important considerations that go into choosing a uniform.

  • Fabric:  It’s important to choose a fabric that’s comfortable to wear at any time of the day and even for long hours, which is why fabric technology is so important.  New fabrics offer a wide range of benefits that are well-suited to different environments.
  • Fit:  What size do you wear and do you prefer for uniforms?  Do you like uniforms that are a bit roomy but not baggy?  If you are a smaller or petite, then consider a junior fit.  If you are fuller, then a missy fit, which allows for more curves and ease of motion, is better.  Unisex, which fits more like a man’s cut, is best for those who need a little more room than the missy sizes.
  • Style:  Today’s medical apparel mirrors fashion trends with styles ranging from clean and tailored, and  feminine and flowery, to traditional and sporty.  In addition, more options are available than ever before, including tops with V-necks, square necks, notch V-necks, ruffles and collars; wraps of all sorts including side wraps, kimonos and even mock wraps; cargo and utility pants; lab and consultation coats, and much more. Think about your personal style away from work. Are you trendy or traditional?  Do you prefer the relaxed look or something more tailored?

In addition, consider the style that matches your job and the people you interact with.  Do you work with kids?  Are you in the ICU or a medical office? If you are more active, a fabric that has mechanical stretch or is soft against the skin will feel more comfortable when you are on the move.

  • Color: Many medical settings are becoming more accepting of a wider range of colors and prints in medical uniforms.  Knowing this, manufacturers are now making medical apparel in a wide range of solid colors and prints, and even including inspirational words and designs on solid backgrounds.

Happy Holidays!
