After a day of business education and roundtables, URA last night turned the spotlight on the medical apparel industry's suppliers at its 3rd Annual Retailer Champion Awards.
For the third consecutive year, Cherokee Uniforms was named best manufacturer. Peaches and Landau tied for best customer service, while Landau walked away with best delivery. And Steve Schum, who represents both White Swan and Prestige, earned the 2009 best sales representative award.
"It really is a fair look at what's going on in the industry, and how retailers feel about the suppliers" says URA co-founder Melanie Imlay.
Awardees were determined by URA members, who were asked to email their picks to the association's office. For those unfamiliar with URA, it is a run-by-and-for retailer group; while welcome at the show, URA membership is not open to manufacturers.

Last week, UniformMarket News previewed some of what retailers will see at this week's URA show in Las Vegas. We looked at current best-selling scrubs, lines that manufacturers report are making a splash at stores across the country. In case you missed it, click here to read Part 1.
We continue our look – and salute – to the medical apparel industry below. You'll find these and more on view today and tomorrow at the show:
  Peaches Uniforms
A trailblazer in the medical apparel industry – Peaches came out with the first fashion scrub twenty years ago – the company has again created several hot-ticket items this season.
From the Izzy Line comes a couple of "Floral Meets Dot" styling options. The Caroline, style 4482, has a shirred neckline with tie details at the neck closure, as well as the sleeve, while the Liz, style 4520, has subtle elastic shirring for a cut-away neckline and on-seam pockets for functionality. Each is paired with the much-talked-about Happy Hour Pant. With the ability to be worn as is, cinched or as a capris, the garment makes a smooth transition from the office to any social setting.
With their cheerful designs and practical details, it's no wonder the Veronica, style 4409, and Cloe, style 4475, are getting high marks from customers. The Veronica, available in a Bugs and Dot Border print, features an elastic shirring waist and notch neck, along with notch slits on the sleeve. The flattering empire waist styling of the Cloe is equally popular. And the new Flutter Garden printed top has multi rows of elastic shirring at the center waist.
Finally, welcome to the jungle or, that is, the Urban Jungle line from Peaches. Many items, like the Expedition top, style 4437, boast Peaches new so-called tranquility fabrication, a 65/35 poly/cotton blend available in a variety of colors. The princess-styled top has two cargo patch pockets, providing a fresh, contemporary look. It is worn with the Expedition Pant, style 7447. Enzymed-washed for extra softness, the full drawstring pant has side cargo pockets, and is accented with bright animal prints.
Stop by Booth #502 to see these and much more.

The speakers assembled by URA this week represent a remarkable mix of leaders whose strategies and ideas can enhance your business and make it more profitable. But their combined body of work far exceeds what can be covered in a one-hour session.
To further the dialogue, and to heighten the take home value, UniformMarket News has gone beyond the business sessions, taking a deeper look at the speakers and the issues raised during their presentations:
Thank Goodness it's Monday (TGIM) – Larry Johnson
Larry Johnson's high energy workshop yesterday morning provided practical "how to's" for leading change, retaining customers, and developing effective work relationships.
The topic is so important that it warrants further evaluation. To continue the theme, UniformMarket News has reprinted an excerpt from one of Larry's many articles on productivity and employee relations. You can find this and others on his website:
The Final Chapter in Managing Productivity
In the July, September, and October issues of this e-zine, I discussed eight of the twelve employee perceptions that have a proven positive impact on profitability, productivity, customer satisfaction, and employee turnover. (Source: "First, Break All The Rules" by Curt Coffman and Marcus Buckingham.) If you'd like to read those articles, the link to the page on my website where you can download them is Free Articles.

Manhattan Beach, CA, October 27 – Visitors to Booths 317 and 416 will have the opportunity to view Shape-ups, a revolutionary new line of footwear from Skechers.
The shoes are perfect for nurses, technicians, and office staff, and can be worn in any environment where slip resistant footwear is needed or required.
Shape ups are designed to enhance the benefits of walking by stimulating muscles not utilized with standard walking shoes. They also reduce the impact on joints by providing a more natural, forgiving walking surface. Designed to improve your life by changing the way you walk, Shape-ups feature a unique soft kinetic wedge insert and dynamic rolling bottom to simulate walking on a soft giving surface like sand. With the comfort of Shape-ups, you will feel your heel sink to the ground as you step, roll forward as your weight shifts to its center, and push off with your toes. This movement will result in stronger leg, buttock, back and abdominal muscles as you stabilize your steps.
