BRANFORD — The Police Department plans to purchase 10 more video cameras that attach to officers' uniforms and allow police to record their interactions with citizens.
Capt. Geoffrey Morgan said the department has had two of the "VieVu" brand cameras for about a year. The department is adding the additional cameras with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice's Assets Forfeiture Fund, specifically from funds seized from drug dealers, police said.
The cameras cost about $900 each, according to the company's website, www.vievu.com.
"These cameras are predominantly for capturing the interaction between an officer and a driver," Morgan said. "They are for when the officer is out on the street, asking someone for a consent to search, for example. It will limit our civil liability and mean less civilian complaints and lawsuits, and will be able to aid in prosecutions."
With the additional cameras, all Branford officers on patrol on any given shift will have one, as they will be shared among officers on different shifts, police said. The new cameras will be arriving shortly.
"It is to substantiate or review officers' conduct," Morgan said. "Prosecutors may also want (the recordings) for court cases."
Recordings will be kept for a period of time, then deleted if they aren't needed, he said.
According to Morgan, officers in the department have been supportive of the program.

Fire-Dex Announces The New FX-R Turnout Gear; FX Redesigned |

|
Medina, Ohio - March 20, 2012 - Fire-Dex has redesigned their FX gear to be unlike anything else on the market. The new FX-R coat has less fabric, weighs less, and allows for a better range of motion.
The new, patent-pending OmniDex Cut has moved the shoulder seams inward to allow the wearer to move with less restriction. The OmniDex Cut has also changed the placement of the sleeve attachment which has eliminated the need for a back pleat, greatly reducing the amount of fabric and weight of the coat. This unique design allows the wearer to move more freely while wearing an SCBA and greatly reduces coat-rise. The elimination of the back pleat has also reduced the number of seams, which helps eliminate irritation under an SCBA and reduces the number of wear-points.
The FX-R design still includes a seamless collar but now includes a pleat in the shell fabric for a more secure fit while still allowing for an uncompromised, seamless moisture barrier. The FX-R collar is NFPA compliant without a throat strap, allowing for better interface with the SCBA face mask.
FX-R gear still includes some tried-and-true design features such as the DexFlex Elbow, DexFlex Knee, and the seamless crotch gusset and is fully customizable with a wide variety of fabrics, pockets, and other features and options.

Sigmatex (Runcorn, U.K.), a converter of carbon fiber into technical textiles for use in composites applications, reported on March 13 that it has entered into a textile partnership with Innegra Technologies (Simpsonville, S.C., USA) to develop applications using Innegra S fibre.
Innegra S high-performance fiber is the lightest structural fiber available, delivering good toughness in a composite while at the same time reducing weight. In both glass and carbon composites, Innegra S increases the composite toughness and impact resistance.
Sigmatex notes that while the growth of composites has given rise to numerous new applications, it has also exposed some weaknesses in the available materials to meet stringent performance requirements. Soaring fuel and energy costs have heightened the need for even lighter composites. The inherent rigidity of high-modulus fibers has, to an extent, limited the applications available.
Innegra S fiber provides an ultra-lightweight fiber (0.84g/cc) with good energy absorption for impact resistance. The Sigmatex Group creates textile solutions that are designed to optimize the performance of carbon fiber in complex structures. Key solutions include 2-D woven, unidirectional, multiaxial (non-crimp) and 3-D textiles across a broad range of industries including aerospace, marine, automotive and high-performance infrastructure products.

|
Global textile brand specifiers can now equip their sports and recreation apparel with both excellent water repellency and improved softness – and do so without the use of fluorine, solvents or alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO).
Dow Corning DWR-7000 Soft Hydro Guard is a silicon-based technology emulsion. It not only provides excellent water repellency but also imparts premium softness to most textile substrates, particularly cellulosic and blends. The water repellency imparted has shown to be durable after 30 home laundry wash times, which is equal to, or better than, that imparted by standard fluorocarbon water repellent finishing systems in the market.
"Leading brand apparel companies are looking for innovative water repellency technologies that can provide eco-friendly solutions for their garments without sacrificing comfort," said Joanna Giovanoli, marketing manager, Dow Corning Textiles. "With the help of Dow Corning DWR-7000 Soft Hydro Guard, the brands are able to create apparel designed for wet weather. In contrast to current fluorocarbon technologies, silicon-based emulsions contain no fluorine, solvents or APEOs (alkylphenol ethoxylate). Silicones exhibit no adverse toxicological effects or evidence of bioaccumulation and have no effects on soil-living species or on crop growth."

AN anti-slash vest, developed in Bolton to deal with the rising problem of knife crime, could soon be used to protect butchers, bikers and timber merchants.
The new knife-proof smart material was originally created to protect the police, armed forces and security personnel.
And a professor from the University of Bolton is leading the project into developing Home Office-approved SARK material.
Professor Subhash Anand of the University of Bolton's Institute for Materials Research and Innovation is working with Future Textiles in Derbyshire, to protect other "at risk" professions.
He said: "When Future Textiles started talking to customers they realised there were other applications for knife-resistant materials.

Fire-Dex Announces The New FDX G1 Structural Glove |

|
Medina, Ohio - March 1, 2012 - Fire-Dex has a released a new structural glove that is unlike anything else currently available on the market. Not only does the FDX G1 have remarkable dexterity but has a 60+ TPP and class-leading Conductive Heat transfer protection.
The off-the-charts TPP score has come from using only the highest quality materials; all full-grain leathers and the latest in thermal protection, the Kovenex-R thermal liner. The Conductive Heat Resistance testing times for the palm and back of the glove are also higher than anything in its class, and again went off the charts in many conditions. The utmost protection is provided by the 5-Layer Back which has full-grain cowhide, full-grain pigskin, Pyrotect moisture barrier and 2 layers of Kovenex-R thermal. The palm is full-grain goatskin with an additional full-grain pigskin palm strap. Reversed leathers are used on the palm for extra grip.
The G1's superior dexterity comes from both its materials and its design. Roll-over, seamless fingertips provide the best tactility, while pre-curved, ergonomically designed fingers add to the total dexterity. Additionally, each finger is constructed of 4 panels of leather around the finger to give it a 3D shape, rather than most gloves which have 2 pieces of leather creating flat fingers.
These gloves are also built to last. On the palms, wrapping around the finger tips, is goatskin which is both durable and supple because of goats' natural lanolin. The back of the hand and the palm strap is pigskin which is abrasion resistant, doesn't stiffen after getting wet, has a porous hide offering the greatest breathability, and becomes softer with use. Kovenex-R® is used for the thermal lining. One of the newest materials in the fire industry, Kovenex-R® provides innovative protection, is thin and lightweight while providing exceptional durability and protection from heat and flame.

Alexium International Group Limited is pleased to announce that it has placed a total of 15 Million shares at 8c each, with an attaching 1 for 3, unlisted 18 month option at an exercise price of 12.5 cents (Placement), to raise AUD ~$1.2 Million (before costs) to sophisticated investor and institutional clients of Baker Young Stockbrokers Limited.
Alexium's potential has been recognized following the press release on January 19, 2012 announcing a technological breakthrough in revolutionary and environmentally friendly Fire Retardant (FR) Nylon technology. The treatment has met key technical milestones for flame retardancy, water repellency and durability, achieved through a protective nanocomposite char layer.
The placement has been undertaken to enable Alexium to "fast track" this unique technology, which has significant revenue potential in both industrial and defense applications. There are no other fire retardant solutions for nylon in the market. Nylon is a widely used low cost material for tear strength, abrasion resistance, durability and breathability in textile and industrial applications but until now, nylon fibers have not been able to be made fire retardant.
