Over the coming months, 600 Canadian troops at the military base in Petawawa, Ont., will be wearing new uniforms as the military tests out a different pattern to replace its iconic camouflage worn by soldiers in Afghanistan.

Known as “Prototype J” the new, predominantly brown, camouflage uniform will serve as a replacement for both the current arid (tan) and temperate woodland (green) camouflage.

The current CADPAT (Canadian Disruptive Pattern) uniform has been in use since the early 2000s, but the new uniforms will be issued to soldiers of the 3rd Battalion and the trials will kick off in two weeks.

Canadian Military states that the new camouflage is expected to debut no later than 2022, and a full roll-out of a new camouflage uniform will take place around 2027.

Though it’s too early to estimate the total cost of the new uniform, it has been noted that between $15 million and $25 million is spent annually on providing operation clothing.
