American workwear giant Carhartt announced a significant step towards sustainable practices: a shift to responsibly sourced cotton. This move aligns with their commitment to building a better world for future generations.

Textile Exchange, a leader in setting industry standards for sustainable textiles, will guide Carhartt’s transition. This involves joining the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol and the Better Cotton initiative.

Transparency and Supporting Farmers:

Carhartt’s memberships provide two key benefits:

  • Traceability: Partnering with the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol allows Carhartt to track the source of their cotton, ensuring transparency and a deeper understanding of their supply chain.
  • Supporting Sustainable Practices: The Better Cotton initiative equips farmers with the knowledge and resources needed to adopt more eco-friendly practices, like water conservation, soil health management, and responsible chemical use. Additionally, Better Cotton promotes fair labor practices.

Maintaining Durability and Quality:

“We’ve always prided ourselves on using the best, most durable materials,” stated Gretchen Valade, Carhartt’s Sustainability Director. “These memberships allow us to offer sustainable workwear without compromising the quality and longevity our brand has been known for over a century.”

Building on Previous Efforts:

Carhartt’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond cotton sourcing. Their Carhartt Reworked program, launched in 2023, has extended the life of over 53,000 garments and diverted more than 79,000 products from landfills.

This transition to responsibly sourced cotton signifies another step forward in Carhartt’s mission to create a lasting positive impact for both the environment and hardworking people around the world.
