The East Providence Fire Department is the first in the U.S. to fully switch to PFAS-free turnout gear, making a big step toward safer, chemical-free protection for all its firefighters. This move was made possible through a partnership with Fire-Dex, a trusted supplier of protective gear, and Milliken & Company, a leading textile innovator.
The new gear features Milliken Assure™, the first flame-resistant moisture barrier in North America that’s both non-PFAS and non-halogenated. Thanks to a $658,000 investment from the city, 170 sets of gear were purchased, enough to give every one of the city’s 125 full-time firefighters a new set.
“This change reflects our department’s commitment to progress and safety,” said Fire Chief Michael Carey. “We’re proud to partner with U.S. companies that share our values and deliver innovative solutions.”
This milestone comes as more attention is being paid to PFAS chemicals, which are linked to health risks. In fact, Rhode Island lawmakers recently introduced a bill (H.B. 5019) that would ban PFAS in firefighter gear by 2027.
Mayor Roberto DaSilva emphasized that this isn’t just about uniforms. “This is about keeping our firefighters safe while they protect our communities. Fire-Dex and Milliken understood our goals and worked with us closely to make it happen.”
The transition began in early 2024 and led to a full three-layer turnout system that avoids PFAS entirely including the outer shell, thermal liner, and moisture barrier. While PFAS-free materials existed for some layers, the moisture barrier had long depended on fluorochemicals until the launch of Assure™ in late 2024 changed that.
The new gear meets all key safety standards, including UL certification and compliance with NFPA 1971-2018. It went through rigorous testing to ensure firefighters get top-level protection without the risks of PFAS exposure.
