The US Armed Forces’ sixth & newest division, the US Space Force, established by former President Donald Trump in 2019, recently unveiled a new prototype design for its services & PT uniforms.

Gen Jay Raymond, commander of the US Space Force announced the force’s new dress code in his speech at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference as two Guardians showed off the new unisex designs.

The Space Force is the first military unit to be created since women were given the opportunity to hold the same positions as men in the services. Therefore, this new navy-blue outfit was first devised for women, making it the first-ever military wear to be designed with women in mind from the start, before adapting it for men as well.

Space Force spokesperson Col. Hatigue described the new uniforms to be “distinctive, modern, professional, and comfortable to wear.”

This new navy-blue outfit is a major departure from the traditional suite-style service uniforms that button in the middle. Instead, the Space Force has opted for a dark blue wraparound jacket with six silver buttons embossed with the service’s symbols (as it’s the sixth unit in the US military), running diagonally from the right shoulder down to the front of the wearer’s chest to be worn over a dress shirt & neckwear.

“The deep blue color was chosen from the Space Force seal. The dark color represents the vastness of outer space,” Hague said. “The buttons have the globe, delta, orbit and stars that are part of both the U.S. Space Force flag and the seal.”

The status of Space Force as the sixth military wing in the Pentagon manifests through a number of specifications in the new uniform prototypes, with six buttons, a six-sided name tag, and a six-sided enlisted insignia.

Besides the service dress, the Guardians have also been testing a physical training wardrobe that includes jacket, shirt & shorts.

Second. Lt. Mahala Norris who is helping vet the clothing for the PT wear to withstand “the most grueling physical regimens” the Guardians put themselves through to always stay mission-ready and protect the US & allied interests in space.

Norris, who featured in the Space Force’s new advert for the PT wear, became the first Department of the Air Force runner to earn a national championship title since 1964 when she won the NCAA’s 3000-meter steeple chase race in June.

“I won at the collegiate level. Now it’s time to win for the Space Force,” said Norris excitedly as the PT wear continues to be tested by Guardians for its comfort & durability.

While the new uniforms will be finalized in the next few months, Hague said, it could be years before they are made available to all Guardians across the department.
