We’ve all had to wear one. Whether at school or in the workplace, in the scouts or playing sport – uniforms are a part of our world and also that of our cinematic idols. A visual reminder that you belong to a certain group or organisation, they make everyone look the same, promoting unity and frowning upon individuality – a stifling of personality that can be very frustrating. See how footballers wear multi-coloured boots in their bid for signature style or how school children find any way possible to rebel, be it girls in overly long or incredibly short skirts or boys with their trousers hanging off their asses. Anything goes except the uniform.
However in the imaginative world of movies, there’s much greater scope for originality within the confines of a uniform. Naturally, film stars tend to look better in them than we mere mortals do, but still costume designers deserve some credit for their inspired ways of reinventing and subverting the uniform and nowhere is this more obvious than in the science-fiction genre.
