HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) – There are new sets of eyes in the Harlan City Police Department.

Now everything officers do is documented on video thanks to a new camera system.

Harlan Police Officers are wearing the new piece of equipment on their uniforms. It is a mobile video camera. Officers started wearing them on Friday.

The camera records everything from the officer’s viewpoint.

“So far it’s working good. Captures good video that can be used,” said Chief Mike Thomas.

The mobile cameras record audio and video for the officer’s entire shift.

“It’s really a tool we can use to trap all the information at that time,” said Cpl. Jeff Owens.

The cameras have already recorded arrests, traffic stops, and a suspect search.

At the end of each officer’s shift, they download the video to a computer to save.

“A picture is worth a thousands words. You can write down all kinds of stuff but a picture will help show what happened better than to explain,” said Officer John Noe.
