When art teacher Rachel Hubbard studied fashion design at a prestigious New York school, band uniforms weren’t in her repertoire.

But when the band director at Hubbard’s school was looking for someone to design a new look for the marching band, Hubbard turned out to be a perfect fit.

“I never imagined that I would be designing a band uniform,” Hubbard said.

Earlier this school year, Park Hill High School band director Ky Hascall and his staff decided the marching band’s uniforms were reaching the end of their lifespan. Generally, Hascall said, uniforms last between eight and 12 years, Hascall said. He and others in the music department began looking through uniform catalogs for ideas. No one uniform fit the bill. So they decided to see if any members of the school’s graphic design department would be interested in designing a uniform from scratch.

“I like to have a little bit of a unique look so we don’t look like somebody else,” Hascall said.
