Gary Dean, an employee at Food Lion wore a neck warmer (buff) that had the American flag on it to work at Food Lion in Havelock, North Carolina.

However, Food Lion’s uniform policy does not allow its employees from wearing clothing that has writing, insignia, or symbols to work.

The manager at Food Lion has informed Dean that someone at work was offended by the American flag image and hence, he was asked to not wear the mask to work anymore.

Dean, being a veteran of the U.S. Air Force decided to resign from the job at Food Lion after stating that the corporate’s decision is against his personal values.

Following this Food Lion has also released a statement saying that they have great respect for the American flag. However, their uniform policy does not allow an American flag as it is a symbol.

“The dress code is meant to ensure a consistent and professional representation of our associates inside of our stores,” stated Food Lion.

Following this, Dean posted his side of the story on social media. He said “When I was told the other day that I had to take it off because one person complained and said they were offended, that offended me. I thought no…we can’t bow to that one person. We need to stand up and we need to stand strong so I decided I can’t, I have to quit.”

Within a week this story quickly gained traction and support from the general public.

Later, Dean received a call from Food Lion’s District Vice President, informing him that, they have changed their uniform policy because of him.

“He said we’ve heard your voice and we’ve heard so many other voices too and we’ve decided to change our policy and allow the American Flag mask, the one I have around my neck here, the one that has caused all of the controversy and I said I want you to know I really thank you for that,” said Dean.

According to Dean, Food Lion has offered him his old job position, however, he is yet to decide if he will accept it or not.
