Baltimore City Police could be one step closer to getting new uniforms outfitted by Under Armour.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the Board of Estimates in the Baltimore City Council is expected to approve an ethics waiver on Wednesday allowing the Police Department to accept the uniforms as gifts from Under Armour.

Spokesperson Lt. Eric Kowalcyzk says improvements to uniforms have been on the agenda for over a year and a half.

“The police commissioner has talked consistently about the desire to improve the working conditions for police officers in any way that he’s able to do that,” Kowalcyzk told WNEW.

The department does not know what the designs will look like, but that will be the next step after the approval.

Comptroller Joan Pratt told the Sun she wants more information before voting for the deal. She is concerned that a gift could pave the way for Under Armour to have an advantage over other firms seeking to outfit the police department.

The project could potentially improve the quality and durability of police uniforms and relieve strain on the department’s budget.
