Like the products manufactured by his Detroit company, Leroy Burgess built a reputation based upon reliability, durability and style.

A retired Detroit city worker and founder of Enterprise Uniform Co., Mr. Burgess died of a heart attack Tuesday at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was 89.

Employed as a bus driver with Detroit Street Railways for 30 years, Mr. Burgess eventually started Enterprise Uniform Co. in 1971, producing uniforms for police, fire, postal and security personnel, as well as church and school graduation robes.

“Owning a business was obviously a proud achievement for my father, especially considering his humble beginnings,” said his daughter, Lynne Burgess-Holmes, co-owner of the company. “He sacrificed a lot to make it successful, and his customers always appreciated his honesty and trustworthiness.”
