In Memoriam: Ed Olesky

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ed Olesky, longtime NAUMD member and president of B. Lippman, Inc., founder of Flying Cross shirts. He passed peacefully on October 4, at the age of 86.

Ed worked in the garment industry his entire career, and was a major influence on NAUMD for over three decades, serving on the Board of Directors during the ’80s and ’90s. He was an active NAUMDer, lending his voice and expertise to numerous committees, including the postal and military affairs committees, on which he served as co-chair and chair, respectively.

Always community minded, Ed served as an auxiliary policeman in Springfield, NJ, an Explorer Scout Advisor, a Democratic County Committeeman for Springfield, a member and chair of the Springfield Board of Adjustment, a founding member of Temple Sharey Shalom, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. A lifetime New Jerseyian, Ed served his country proudly in World War II in the United States Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Ranger.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Anne, and his three children, Perfection Uniforms’ Steven, Lisa and Jonathan, and to the entire Olesky family. He will be missed.

The Economy:

More Gloom Lies Ahead for Cities, Report Says

Nearly a third of the nation’s cities are laying off workers this year. More than half have canceled or delayed infrastructure projects. And two out of five have raised their fees.

America’s cities are bracing for what they expect will be their fifth straight year of declining revenues, according to a survey of city finance officers recently released by the National League of Cities.

Cities have been unable to look for help in some of the traditional places. Half of the cities reported that their state aid has been cut since 2009, as states struggled to balance their own budgets.

So many cities have resorted to service cuts. Nearly a fifth is making cuts to public safety. Nearly three-quarters are cutting their personnel costs through hiring freezes, wage freezes or reductions, layoffs or reduced health benefits for their workers.

The survey finds that the outlook for cities next year was not much brighter. “The effects of depressed real estate markets, low levels of consumer confidence and high levels of unemployment,” the report said, “will continue to play out in cities through 2011, 2012 and beyond.”

Organic Cotton Market Grew 20 Percent in 2010

According to a report by Textile Exchange, neither the recession nor unstable economies put a damper on the fast-growing organic textiles industry which grew 20 percent to an estimated $5.61 billion in 2010.

“Consumers continue to be committed to supporting the use of organic cotton and other sustainable fibers, while brands and retailers continue to make their product lines more sustainable by continuing to increase their use of such fibers and safer, more innovative manufacturing processes,” said LaRhea Pepper, Textile Exchange managing director.

2010 was the first year that Textile Exchange requested data regarding industry use of sustainable fibers including recycled and cellulosic fiber. Two fibers, recycled polyester and Tencel, were the two leading fibers in terms of quantity reported by responding companies, with all respondents indicating substantial increases in use of those and other sustainable fibers in the upcoming years. The 2010 results will form the base line for next year’s report.

Applied DNA Raises US Bank Security to New Heights

Police work just got a little bit easier, thanks to NAUMD member Applied DNA Sciences.

The company, a provider of DNA-based anti-counterfeiting technology and product authentication solutions, recently announced that Gold Coast Bank, a financial institution located on Long Island, New York, is deploying a new and formidable security program to protect against bank robberies and malicious invasions of ATMs and their enclosures.

Gold Coast will install SmartDNA ™ Sentry 500 Intruder Spray Systems at each of its three locations. In the event of a crime, the SmartDNA System launches the DNA spray, covering criminals’ clothing and skin with a covert and unique botanical DNA marker, irrefutably linking criminals to the scene of their crime.

This system is already being used in Sweden with great success and has drawn interest from banks, insurance companies, cargo firms, and other businesses with high value products.

In the U.S., APDN has been working with police agencies toward implementing a protection system for cargo, logistics systems and other law enforcement work. The system is also appropriate for the protection of pharmacies, where narcotics-motivated robberies are notoriously rising.

APDN sells patented DNA security solutions to protect products, brands and intellectual property from counterfeiting and diversion. SmartDNA is a tactical forensic system, providing unique DNA codes in a series of product formats that empower law enforcement by providing absolute evidence/crime/offender linkage.
