Nurses have expressed their disappointment and growing confusion regarding the recently introduced NHS uniforms, which aim to distinguish clinical staff based on color.

Dr. Crystal Oldman, the Chief Executive of the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), described it as a “missed opportunity” in light of the prevailing sentiment among many nurses who believed that the new uniforms did not accurately represent their profession. Additionally, a nurse from London voiced concerns about the potential for confusing job titles, fearing that this approach might dilute the public’s perception of the nursing profession.

The new uniforms, developed and organized by NHS Supply Chain, incorporate 15 distinct “colorways” for NHS clinical staff, along with 12 trim colors for allied health professionals such as therapists and dieticians. Although the concept of uniforms with color-coded distinctions was supported by a majority of nurses during a consultation, the unveiling of the new uniforms last week did not receive universal acclaim.
