After rolling out the first maternity flight suit prototype in June 2021 for expecting aircrew so they don’t have to resort to oversized flight suite uniforms or khakis that are potential safety hazards in their line of duty, the services have now shifted its focus to the Navy by announcing the launch of a pilot maternity uniform program for expecting sailors.

The new program will serve to provide maternity uniforms to expecting sailors at no additional cost. However, all officers participating in the program are liable to return their maternity uniforms to the department postpartum.

According to a new naval administrative message, the wear test scheduled to run from Jan 2, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2026, for pregnant volunteers will allow enlisted sailors and officers to receive “a full array of authorized Navy maternity uniforms”.

“Issued maternity uniforms may be worn throughout the period of required wear up to 12 months after receipt,” the NAVADMIN said. “Participant selection will occur on a first-come, first-served basis. Uniforms will be provided to participants fully hemmed and with all required sewn-on accouterments attached.”

Sailors willing to participate in the maternity uniform program must have medical documentation of their pregnancy and command approval, and they will be required to submit their application on MyNavy HR website. Officers participating in the pilot program must not have received or intended to receive maternity clothing allowance.

In 2022, 400 volunteers will be a part of this maternity pilot program. However, the number can be increased going forward.

“If the 2022 MPP is successful, allowable participation numbers will be increased,” the NAVADMIN said.

The Navy Working Uniform Type II, Service Khaki for E-7s and above, and the Navy Service Uniform for E-6s and below are the uniforms included in this maternity program.

“Service Dress Whites and Blues dependent upon the Uniform needed and the Cardigan Sweater will also be issued,” a Navy news release said.

Earlier in 2021, the services rolled out new maternity uniforms for pregnant marines bearing adjustable tabs for the apparel to fit better.
