Getting hot and sweaty in the gym is an inevitable side-effect of working out, but it can still be rather embarrassing for those who sweat a bit more than others.

But thanks to Portugese researchers, Carla Silva and Arutr Cavaco-Paulo, the days of worrying about your odors from sweaty clothes could soon be a thing of the past, all thanks to a fragrance-emitting cotton fabric

Published in ACS Applied Material Interfaces, the researchers said, “”Perspiration as a response to daily activity and physical exercise results in unpleasant odors that cause social unrest and embarrassment. To tackle it, functional textiles incorporating fragrances could be an effective clothing deodorizing product.

In order to develop the new fabric, the research tried two techniques.

The first approach involved using a specific protein found in pigs’ noses that binds to scent molecules, while the second approve used liposomes in order to help bring the fragrance into the fabric.

The end results?

The first approach gave more of a quick release burst of scene while the liposome technique gave a more slower and controlled release and had the potential to hold more fragrance.

However, the researchers concluded that the two strategies could prove useful for different clothing applications, such as in active wear or in summer clothes.
